Summary

In 1891, Columbus, New Mexico, was founded by Civil War veteran Col. Andrew O. Bailey. The army camp was established in 1912, and the Camp at Columbus became the home of the 13th Cavalry. Homesteaders began to arrive from many states. The business district had the necessary firms to support the population. The village continued to grow until the infamous Pancho Villa raid on March 9, 1916. Columbus was devastated, but the ensuing "Punitive Expedition" by Gen. John J. Pershing caused the Village of Columbus to boom. Good times lasted until the army closed Camp Furlong in 1924. The boom went bust, and by the 1930s and 1940s it was classified as a ghost town. Columbus in later years was discovered by retirees along with the winter snowbirds to make it a viable village again. Tourism is its main industry today.
