Summary

Wisconsin, a fabled vacationland of the northern Midwest, is too little known for its political traditions of progressive sentiment and likewise for the work of its comic artists. But Wisconsin-close enough to supply artists to Chicago during the golden days of the daily newspaper (with Sunday funnies) and marked by a counterculture centered in state capital Madison in latter days-has been a home space and creative arena for the comic art of Middle America. Comics in Wisconsinportrays comics ranging from "The Gumps" and "Gasoline Alley" to humorous adaptations of totemic figures Howard Zinn and Studs Terkel and banishes the idea of comics as a childish genre. The collection reveals how Wisconsin comic artists, editors, and publishers invented a new language of popular art-serious by intent but also funny. Specialists and collectors will treasure this volume and popular readers will find themselves educated and vastly entertained.Comics in Wisconsincontains over two hundred reproductions, many in color.
