Summary

This book is an elegant overview of Binet's career, bringing together black & white and color work. The book, which is divided into seven thematic chapters, features the work of: Alvar Aalto, Geoffrey Bawa, Raoul Bunschoten, Caruso St John, Le Corbusier, Peter Eisenman, Zaha Hadid, Sigurd Lewerentz, Demetris Pikionis, Peter Zumthor and others. Each chapter highlights particular aspects of the work of a few architects and designers in a way that only Binet's dramatic photographs can draw out. Interludes of more personal work, including abstract landscapes, show a different aspect of Binet's work. The accompanying essay by writer Mark Pimlott will explain Binet's working methods and highlight the ideas that inform Binet's work, including abstraction, the importance of materiality and light, the experience of space, and the emotional power of architecture.

Author Biography

Helene Binet was born in 1959 in Switzerland. After studying photography at the Instituto Europeo de Design in Rome, she worked for two years as a photographer at the Grand Theatre de Geneve before coming to architectural photographs. She has worked with David Chipperfield, Tony Fretton, Zaha Hadid, Peter Zumthor, Sauerbruch Hutton, Coop Himmelb(l)au, and many others, photographing some of the world's most spectacular, influential, and powerful buildings. A master at capturing what Le Corbusier called the ‘masterful, correct, and magnificent play of volumes brought together in light’, Binet takes pictures that give the viewer a unique and compelling experience of space.
