Summary

The design and methods for construction of single and two fluid electrochemical devices are presented in this highly anticipated volume on the construction of multiple and single cell redox structures. The need for and increased use of non reactive but electronically conductive electrode materials in both primary and secondary batteries has generated requirements for the use of inexpensive and materials. One of the very few such materials for electrode structures with inherent low cost as well as long life is the element carbon, and most of the methods described here can be very effectively employed for static (non-flowing) electrolyte cellsPractical solutions are described in this book to many of the problems associated with working with carbon in its very many forms. The book presents the results of a number of years of basic R&D in electrochemical systems employing fairly aggressive chemical components which would attack most materials commonly employed in the construction of cells and batteries. In most instances these batteries are fabricated mainly from inexpensive carbon and polymeric materials. Much attention is paid to making these devices "leak proof" because in many cases the active chemicals are sufficiently corrosive and present health hazards such that virtually there can be no tolerance to escaping materials from within the battery modules. Various encapsulation processes are described in considerable detail, for the creation and operation of these structures for use in industry.
