Summary

This accessible history of Confucianism, or the 'Way of the Ru', emphasizes the religious dimensions of the tradition. It clearly explains the unique and subtle philosophical ideas as well as devoting equal attention to the 'arts of the Ru' (rushu) and explores how seemingly simple acts such as reading, sitting quietly, correct protocol, artistic creativity, examinations and attending the family and the state were seen as ways of ultimate transformation.

It explains the origins of the Ru and explores their impact in imperial China, before providing extensive coverage of the modern era. As the empire drew to an end, there were impassioned movements both to reinvent and to eradicate Ru values. Less than forty years ago, it seemed close to extinction, but today the tradition is undergoing spectacular revival. Confucianism in China: An Introduction shows how the long history of the Ru is vital to understanding China today.

Suitable for anyone wishing to gain an overview of the tradition, the book contains an extensive glossary of Chinese terms and 20 images. Further resources can be found on the book's webpage, including guidance on further reading, key figures, a timeline, review questions and chapter summaries.
