Summary

English summary: This work reconstructs the conflict between the Church and supporters of the Copernican theory between the publication of Copernicus's De revolutionibus orbium caelestium in 1543 and Galileo's first trial in 1616. The first half concentrates on the writings and influence of Giovanni Maria Tolosani, a Dominican who wrote the first anti-Copernican work in 1547. The book's second half considers the various doctrinal councils that met during Galileo's trial. An appendix contains the first Italian translation of the anti-Copernican treatise De caelo supremo immobili et terra infirma stabili. Italian text.
