Summary

As the author states that her book "...is about courage, too, about the out-and-out courage to claim what is rightfully yours, to recognize it, to dig in your heels, and never give away to anyone what is yours, your home, your motherland, your heart, your right to walk with your head held high.... The author calls her novel Daughter part of the war effort. The heroine absorbs both what I (the Author) personally experienced and the experiences of many of the combatants, military volunteers, and displaced people whom fate brought together. She has become a 'stronghold' for many people. 'We shall live' says the heroine. 'Indeed, we shall!' I reply." from the Foreword by Tamara Duda. This book surely will become a classic of war fiction and war journalism and a landmark for our understanding of what is happening in Ukraine today.

Author Biography

Tamara Horikha Zernya (Tamara Duda) was born and raised in Kyiv. A poetry and prose author as well as a songwriter, she holds a degree in journalism from Taras Shevchenko National University in Kyiv. Daughter is her debut novel and has received favourable reviews from both literary critics and well-estab- lished Ukrainian writers. With the outbreak of war in Eastern Ukraine, Tamara took a leave of absence from her career to serve as a volunteer at the front. In 2014 and 2015, she and her husband raised funds for, purchased, and delivered equipment and aid to Ukrainian sol- diers to the front. Daisy Gibbons, an award-winning translator from Ukrainian and Russian into English, presently serves as a translator for the New York Times and as a literature consultant for Netflix. She lived in Russian and Ukraine for several years, where she worked as a ghostwriter for several Ukrainian publications and as an editor for a Kyiv think tank. Gibbons attended the University of Cambridge and the State University of Nizhny Novgorod, Russia. She lives in London.
