Summary

A timely intervention in the study of masculinity in literature, this book analyses the way in which the rhetoric of religious and civic virtue impinged upon the representation of the men in Defoe's fiction. Stephen Gregg here redresses the critical balance in Defoe studies by giving sustained scholarly attention to the theme of manly virtue in Defoe's fictional writing. Further, this study adds to scholarship by considering how the gendered discourses of civic virtue interact religion and commerce, which have been previously studied in Defoe. This project directly contributes to the study of masculinity in the literature and culture of the eighteenth century: in particular, the book's attention to religious manliness and to the interaction of the diverse discourses shaping manliness are approaches insufficiently addressed elsewhere. Through examination of Defoe's fiction this book examines the dominant discourses that shaped manliness in the early eighteenth century.
