Er führt den Leser in das bewegte literarische Leben in Berlin Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts und gibt eine Fülle neuer Aufschlüsse über die Welt Fontanes, über die Personen, mit denen er zu tun hatte, und rückt mit Friedrich Eggers einen Mann ins Blickfeld, der bislang kaum Beachtung gefunden hat. Eggers, der das literarischer Vereinsleben prägte, spielte in den fünfziger Jahren für Fontanes literarischen und beruflichen Werdegang eine wichtige Rolle. Fontane hat Eggers zeitlebens skeptisch gegenüber gestanden, aber gleichzeitig von seiner Hilfs- und Aufopferungsbereitschaft profitiert Für die Kommentierung konnte der umfangreiche Nachlaß von Friedrich Eggers erstmalig intensiv genutzt werden, so daß die Edition Informationen bietet, die weit über die Beziehung der beiden Briefschreiber hinausweisen.
