This 416-page textbook presents an integration of Statics with several topics from Mechanics of Materials. The emphasis is on design of structural components from standard sized elements based on economy and safety. This textbook is based on a different philosophy than that traditionally employed in teaching the first course in mechanics. The changes in philosophy were based on six premises:

1. Present fundamental concepts in a much more interesting manner.

2. Provide a smooth transition from introductory design to introductory analysis.

3. Emphasize modeling structural elements with free body diagrams.
