Excerpts

Disaster Off Martha's Vineyard chronicles the shipwreck of the City of Columbus, which wrecked in the winter of 1884 off the coast of Martha's Vineyard. It was deemed the worst wreck off the New England coast in the 19th century. More than a hundred people perished in the disaster. For six years, she had been a mainstay vessel for both freight and passengers, traveling from Boston to Savannah. However, one winter's night, careless direction caused the ship to run aground on the rocky shoals of Gay Head, Martha's Vineyard. Unfortunately, the captain gave the wrong command, which only caused the ship to sink faster. Thomas Dresser brings the story of eye-witness and survivor accounts into the present day with the help of recent diving expeditions.
