Summary

This book is an edited compilation of selected primary source documents pertaining to health, medicine education, disease, crime, and related areas in the United States from 1860 to the early years of the twentieth century. Included are articles, reports, letters, court cases, speeches, newspaper accounts, governmental findings and excerps from memoirs and contemporary books, among other sources. Each document is properly introduced and set in historical context, and each author is also identifies as far as possible in a brief biographical sketch.

Author Biography

Dr. Schlup completed his Ph.D in history at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the M.L.S. degree from Indiana University. He has written hundreds of essays for historical encyclopedias/dictionaries and numerous articles in professional history. He currently lives in Arizona and is an adjunct instructor in history at Mesa Community College. Ms.Blochowiak, a graduate of Mercy Hospital School of Nursing and the University of Central Oklahoma (B.A and M.A. in History) worked as an obstetrical nurse for twenty-five years, followed by nearly seventeen years at the Oklahoma Historical Society.
