Summary

Documenting a Myth presents the work of three women photographers who, independently of each other, photographed in the American South during the 1920s and 30s. Coming from vastly different backgrounds and entertaining somewhat different concepts about their medium, each chose to photograph rural inhabitants in the flatland areas of North and South Carolina, and in the Appalachian highlands. Each believed that carefully composed images had the potential to transform the lives of ordinary people into art, and in this way hold them up as worthy of respect.
