Summary

Though far from beaches and great monuments, the southwest of France remains timelessly popular, and for good reason. Its amiable landscape of broad river valleys and gentle hills is a place with little traffic, where eagles and kites soar over the fields at noon, and owls on fenceposts watch you drive by at night. Beyond the great medieval art at Toulouse and Moissac, and the Palaeolithic cave paintings of the Dordogne, its attractions may seem rather modest; but modesty is one of the region's charms -- along with the wine and the magret de canard and the three-hour lunches. The southwest is everything the modern world is not, and Dana Facaros and Michael Pauls offer the authoritative guide to the corner of France they know best of all. Book jacket.

Excerpts

Set in a privileged, fertile valley on the river Isle, Perigueux, the capital of the Dordogne département is a cheerful city of 35,000 who produce and market truffles, foie gras and fat strawberries, and print all the postage stamps in France.
