Summary

Informed by newly available diaries and correspondence, Dorothy Edwards is the first comprehensive biographical and critical study of this enigmatic writer whose tragic suicide at the age of thirty-one served to plunge her fascinating body of work into obscurity.

Author Biography

Dorothy Edwards is the first full-length critical literary study of this enigmatic author, born in the small mining valley of Ogmore Vale in 1903. Combining close textual analysis with comprehensive biography, this book brings to light previously unpublished material, and considers Edwards's work in the light of her views and experiences. Claire Flay argues that Edwards's upbringing deeply influenced her perception of gender, class and nationality, leading her ultimately to the creation of a small but fascinating body of work in the 1927 short-story collection Rhapsody, and the 1928 novel Winter Sonata, before her tragic suicide in 1934.
