Summary

A garage is a special place-not home, not office, not rec room. It may combine elements of all of these, yet it remains unique. Dreams are born, housed, revived, and realized within the walls and beneath the rafters of an enthusiast's garage. It is a haven from life's broader concerns, where work is not really work, and virtually anything seems possible. Dream Garagesexplores this hallowed space, taking the reader into 21 motorhead havens, where automotive and motorcycle enthusiasts store and work on the objects of their passion. Some of the structures are expansive, some more modest; some are working garages, others near spotless showcases of pristine machines and automotive art work and memorabilia. Pervading all of them is a love of the motor vehicle and an appreciation for the structure that allows us to harbor and revive them. Here readers will find enthusiasts who collect, preserve, and work on sports cars, race cars, motorcycles, trucks, speed record vehicles and related machinery, and treasures. Revered names like Ferrari, Corvette, Road Runner, Cobra, and Jaguar dwell in these special spaces. Dream Garagesis not a manual on building a great gara≥ it's a look at the ideas and passions that can make any garage great. Dream Garagesis the Architectural Digestfor those whose veins run with gasoline.

Author Biography

Kris Palmer is a gearhead and freelance writer whose work appears regularly in Minneapolis StarTribune automotive section and several enthusiast automotive magazines. Palmer contributed to MBI's highly regarded The Cobra in the Barn and authored The Fast and the Furious: The Official Car Guide. When not racing down a deadline, he logs quality garage time in the company of his modified Triumph TR6. Palmer resides in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Peter Egan is one of the most readable writers in the motorcycle enthusiast world. His work first appeared in Cycle World magazine in 1977, and he has been a regular fixture there ever since. Peter lives near Madison, Wisconsin.

California-born David Gooley has been a photographer for the past 40 years. His credits include award-winning still photographic images for commercial and industrial subjects ranging from food, fashion, celebrities, artists and catalogue. David struck out on his own in photography and cinematography, bringing his skills to bear in the subjects of motorcycling and auto racing, and it was not unusual for him to have at least 30 motorsports magazine covers internationally in a single month. While still residing in California, he travels the world seeking interesting automobiles and people.

Robert Genat is an accomplished author and photographer who has written 25 books for MBI Publishing. A self-proclaimed “gearhead,” Robert has restored two classic cars in the last 10 years (one of which was featured in a nationally syndicated television show), and has recently completed a chopped ’32 five-window coupe. He and his wife Robin own and operate ZoneFive Photo. Genat lives in Encinitas, California.

James Mann is one of the world's leading car and motorcycle photographers, with more than 20 years of experience shooting for enthusiast publications, the motor industry, and businesses around the world. His work has appeared within and on the covers of more than 50 books and has provided stunning visuals for numerous magazines, including Classic and Sports Car, CAR magazine, Forza, The Sunday Times, and Automobile magazine as well as being chosen to photograph the British Auto Legends stamps for the Royal Mail. His advertising clients include Aston Martin, BMW, and Toyota, among others.

Peter Vincent discovered photography by purchasing a Popular Photography Annual in the mid-1960s that included Adams, Weston, White, Steiglitz, Strand, and many more. He knew at that moment that he would do photographic work professionally, and he went on to take workshops with Ansel Adams, Brett Weston, Morley Baer and others. But Vincent also grew up as a gearhead, buying his first car at 15 and learning how to fix, customize, and personalize automobiles. His love for visual work, minimalism, and transportation has found its way into Motorbooks titles Hot Rod Garages (2009) and Dream Garages (2006). Official Website: www.petervincentphotographer.com
