Excerpts

Surrounded on two sides by Spain and on one side by ocean, this northernmost part of Portugal offers a fully fortified border town, several graceful small cities, two lovely river valleys, a national park and mountains. Altogether, it is one of Portugal's most charming areas, with few block-buster sights, but a fine selection of experiences, all neatly spaced. Travel around its river and ocean perimeters is mostly free of narrow, steep roads; even the trip back through its centre is not a hair-raising one, so those who shun mountainous roads will find it comfortable. Attractions in the traditional sense - museums, monuments, major churches or palaces - are few, but in few other places will you find such a succession of likeable, picturesque towns.
