Summary

Taking the North-East Atlantic ocean as an example of regional practice, this book addresses the dual approach to ocean governance in international law. It examines the interaction between zonal and integrated management approaches and the conservation of marine living resources and marine biological diversity. The study examines the limitations of the traditional zonal approach and suggests new possibilities for conformity between sovereign states, international law and sustainable development.

Excerpts

This book addresses the validity and limits of the dual approach in international law of the sea. In so doing, special emphasis is placed on the conservation of marine living resources as well as marine biological diversity since a tension between the two different approaches may be sharply raised in this field. The work clarifies whether and to what extent the traditional approach in international law is changing in relation to the conservation of marine living resources and marine biological diversity.
