Author Biography

Douglas Palmer is a science writer and teaches geology at Cambridge University, UK. Robert Dinwiddie is a professional science writer and editor with training in geology and oceanography. David Burnie is a former winner of the Aventis Prize for Science Books, and also edited DK's highly successful Animal. Martin Walters is the author of many natural-history books, and also editor for the People and Plants initiative of WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature). Clint Twist is now a full-time author but was previously a journalist and museum consultant. Michael Allaby is a science writer, who has written many popular books about environmental science and natural history. He is a former winner of the Aventis Junior Prize for Science Books. John Farndon studied geography and Earth science at Cambridge University, UK. Now a science writer and editor, he also conducts practical demonstrations about Earth science. Tony Waltham teaches at Nottingham Trent University, UK. He has written books on engineering geology and cave science, and is also a photographer. Kim Dennis-Bryan is a paleontologist and writer, and lectures for the Open University, UK. Under the overall direction of James F. Luhr, staff at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History have been involved in the planning and authentication of this book since its inception. James F. Luhr is currently Chairman of the Smithsonian Institution's Mineral Sciences Department. Other distinguished Smithsonian Institution consultants include: Douglas H. Erwin, Richard S. Fiske, Bevan M.
