Summary

The economic transformations that took place in the states and kingdoms around the eastern Mediterranean following the conquests of Alexander the Great are not as well known as the political changes. Yet in many ways the three final centuries BC were a key phase in the development of international economic networks, as well as in the evolution of territorial infrastructures and institutions. changes such as the dissemination of fiduciary coins as well as gold and silver, the spread of new staples, and of new domestic and public fashions represent the more visible aspects of these transformations. New ideas about economic management in an uncertain and unregulated environment were equally important.
