Summary

Young people face unprecedented uncertainty and change in contemporary worlds of work. Globally, almost 74 million young people were seeking work in 2014, an increase of over 3 million since the Global Financial Crisis of 2007. Those in work face insecurity and a changing workforce in which the notion of a career scarcely resembles that of previous generations. This book explores the challenges faced by young people in this environment as they transition from school to work and asks how well young people are prepared for the contemporary labour force during their school years. Proposing the novel concept of adversity capital, it asks: is the current industrial model of schooling capable of preparing young people for working life of the 21st century? This book also explores how the teaching profession may be constrained to respond to these contemporary challenges, and how schools could be more outward looking in their daily operation.
