Summary

This book analyzes policies in eight European countries that aim to intervene in the reproduction of social and educational inequalities. In order to understand why some policies succeed and others fail, it is necessary to look at education systems through cross-national comparison.

Author Biography

MARC DEMEUSE Professor in the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences at the University of Mons, Belgium. Heis Head of the faculty's Administration Institute and is involved in several projects and research networks at European level, including the Network of Experts in Social Sciences of Education and Training (NESSE).
DANIEL FRANDJISenior Researcher in Sociology at the Centre Alain Savary, National Pedagogic Research Institute, Lyon, France, and at the Mediterranean Laboratory of Sociology, France. He is the coordinator of the research project EuroPEP, to develop a comprative analysis of educational priority principles in eight European countries.
DAVID GREGERSenior Researcher at Faculty of Education, Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic.He is interested in comparative education, particularly in the characteristics of education systems and policy interventions that may reduce the achievements gaps. He is author of Towards Educational Change: The Transformation of Educational Systems in Post-Communist Countries (with Eliska Walterova).
JEAN-YVES ROCHEX Professor of Education Sciences at the Paris 8 University in Saint-Denis, France. He has previously published Knowledge, Pedagogy and Society. International Perspectives on Basil Bernstein's Sociology of Education (with D. Frandji and P. Vitale).
