Author Biography

Dave Lochtie is the Operations Manager for the Personal Learning Advisory Service at the Open University which provides targeted one-to-one support for students identified in the institution’s Access and Participation Plan. He is Chair of the UK Advising and Tutoring association (UKAT) which supports personal tutors and academic advisors across the UK, as well as Co-chair of the Association for Peer Learning and Support which promotes best practice in student-led learning. He is a qualified teacher and co-author of Effective Personal Tutoring in Higher Education. He has worked in student services management roles at the universities of Derby and New Orleans as well as serving as a Director, Trustee and Governor of the University of Roehampton and Bournemouth University Students’ Union.

Emily McIntosh is Director of Student Life at the University of Bolton where she is have responsible for welcome and induction, personal tutoring, student learning development and peer learning as well as contributing to a variety of cross-institutional strategic initiatives.  Herresearch interests extend to student peer learning, transitions, personal tutoring and student resilience.  She is an Executive Committee member of UK Advising and Tutoring (UKAT) and a member of the UKAT Research Committee.  She is also the network coordinator for the European First Year Experience Network (EFYE).  She previously held positions at the University of Manchester, the University of Liverpool and Keele University working in a variety of roles in teaching & learning, student support and the broader student experience.

Andrew Stork is a University Teacher and Programme Director for the Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education at the University of Sheffield. He is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and has presented at national and international conferences on personal tutoring. He has experience of a wide range of educational sectors and contexts, and has taught on and led postgraduate education programmes across a range of sectors. Previously, he was cross-institutional quality lead for personal tutoring and student experience, and has held a broad range of curriculum leadership, quality, teaching enhancement and staff development positions. Ben W Walker is a senior lecturer in Educational Development at Oxford Brookes University where he supports colleagues to gain fellowship of the Higher Education Academy, delivers staff development and undertakes educational research projects. In previous roles at the University of Lincoln, Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Derby, he supported a wide range of trainee teachers and existing practitioners. He was  programme leader of the Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education and has been an invited keynote speaker at national and international conferences. As co-author of books and journal articles on personal tutoring, he is at the forefront of professional development and research in this field and committed to developing it further. Nienke Alberts is a Senior Research Associate and Lecturer in Anthropology at the University of Bristol. She led on the Personal Tutoring Project, a research project that was set up to review and evaluate personal tutoring at the University of Bristol, looking at the experiences of both staff and students. In this role she also advises the University of Bristol on personal tutoring policy and practice. Previously, she worked as a researcher at AccessHE on research identifying barriers students from minoritised backgrounds face accessing Higher Education while supporting universities to evaluate the impact of their outreach activities. She has worked as a lecturer at University College London, the University of Roehampton, and the University of East London.

Alison Raby is a Senior Lecturer, Senior Tutor and Programme Leader at the University of Lincoln, in addition to being co-Project Manager of the University’s partnership with Guizhou University in China. Prior to this, she worked with international students at Nottingham Trent International College, after leaving Poland where she taught EFL and ran an English school. She has a master’s degree in Applied Linguistics and has completed a PhD on An Exploration of the Relationships between Chinese Students and their Personal Tutors: an IPA Study. I have published book chapters and journal articles on personal tutoring, and am currently part of UKAT’s leadership team.
