Summary

Since their discovery over sixty years ago, eicosanoids have come to r epresent a diverse family of bioactive lipid modulators, including pro staglandins, thromboxanes, leukotrienes, lipoxins, isoprostanes, hepox ilins, hydroxy acids, epoxy and hydroxy fatty acids. This book contain s conference presentations regarding the regulation of eicosanoid enzy mes and, in particular, cyclooxygenases, lipoxygenases, and phospholip ases. In addition, recent evidence over the last seven years has led t o the identification of a number of receptors for these bioactive lipi ds. The new field of isoprostanes is also represented. It has become i ncreasingly evident that eicosanoids play a critical role in signal tr ansduction, both in normal cells and in pathological processes. These aspects are discussed in relation to cellular events, such as apoptosi s, angiogenesis, and cancer prevention and treatment.
