Corrie localiza al único descendiente del muerto, Jesse Gower, que reclama la propiedad de la cruz de oro y afirma que antes de dedicarse a buscar objetos antiguos, Jim Gower había sido propietario de un rancho a pocos kilómetros de High Lonesome, que le expropió el gobierno.
La investigación concluye que Jim Gower murió alrededor de 1945, envenenado. Entretanto, la doctora Kelly ha identificado uno de los objetos hallados junto al cadáver, se trata de una bolsita de hierbas con propiedades medicinales, como las que usaban los apaches.
