Summary

Conflict between an individual and society brings about extremely aggressive characters in this history, set in 1804. Martin Muriel is a young impersonator of liberal ideas from the Spanish middle class. With a society established by the principles of the 19th century, it is dominated by the ideology from aristocrats and clergy members. The main question that this book focuses on is Who decides the central ideas imposed on society? The protagonist that researches this question dreams of the formation of a mutual respect between royalty and the rest of the town. He experiences a strong desire to bring about equality and justice to his town.

Author Biography

Benito Pérez Galdós is a key contributor to the introduction to the realistic Spanish novel of the 19th century. He was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1912. He is the author of many classic titles, including Marianela and Trafalgar.
