Summary

This manuscript analyzes the ideological discourse in a part of Jose Joaquin Fernandez de Lizardi's writings, his articles and periodicals (from El Pensador Mexicano to Conversaciones del Payo y el Sacristan)that has not yet received much attention by scholars. The author emphasizes Lizardi's articles'importance to identify the "criollos" as the one section of New Spain's society that worked as the active mechanism in the process that would eventually result in the movement for independence and materialized the political change in Mexico.

Author Biography

Dr. Maria del Rosario Lara completed her studies in Sociology at the Universidad de Ciudad Juarez. She later traveled to the United States where she graduated in Spanish American Literature from The Univsity of Texas El Paso. In 2007 she completed her Ph.D at Texas Tech University, also specializing in Colonial Mexican Literature. Dr. Lara is Assistant Professor in the Department of Foreign Languages at Francis Marion University in Florence, South Carolina.
