Summary

In the namesake story in this collection, the collapse of a pier in a tourist town is just the largest in a set of literary Russian dolls. The collection contains progressively smaller yet more impactful stories that draw the reader inwards. Two children with a loaded gun, travelers seeking adventure in the Amazon, and an abandoned princess are just some of the characters in these stories that, much like all of Haddon’s work, speak to us about loneliness and the difficulty of connecting socially.
