En pleno siglo XX, J. R. R. Tolkien, un profesor de anglosajón e historia del Inglés en la universidad de Oxford, fue capaz de crear un extenso poema épico a partir de su propia imaginación. Tolkien había nacido en 1892 en Sudáfrica, y desde los cuatro años vivió en Inglaterra, hasta su muerte en 1973. Echaba de menos una mitología propia de su país, y decidió escribirla él mismo. En la epopeya que comenzó en 1914 entrelazó, con voluntad de tolerancia, historias de elfos, hombres, enanos, orcos, ents y hobbits desde el inicio mismo del mundo, como un grandioso homenaje a la patria que amaba entrañablemente y con una intención de conservación del patrimonio cultural. En esta biografía se cuenta cómo, alentado siempre por un espíritu de superación, se entrelazaron en su vida el trabajo del artista y escritor con el del padre de familia, estudioso de los idiomas, erudito y conferenciante.

Author Biography

Eduardo Segura is an author, a translator, and a professor. His doctoral thesis is an analysis of The Lord of the Rings and J. R. R. Tolkien’s poetics. He has translated Tolkien’s work and was a consultant on the film adaptation of The Lord of the Rings.
