Summary

A major shift in post-Civil War America occurred with the 1876 election of Rutherford B. Hayes to the presidency. On election night the Democratic candidate. Samuel J. Tilden, appeared to have wrested away control of the White House from the Republican Party, which had held the presidency since 1860. Tilden received over 250,000 votes more than Hayes: however, disputed electoral ballots in three Southern states still occupied by Federal troops were awarded to the Republican candidate, giving him the presidency. In return, as president Hayes brought an end to Reconstruction in the South. In The Election of 1876 and the Administration of Rutherford B. Hayes. Senate historian Donald A. Ritchie examines the circumstances of the disputed election and the events that gave Hayes the presidency. Book jacket.
