Summary

The ECG is a fundamental diagnostic tool in cardiology, allowing accurate diagnosis and monitoring of acute and chronic ischemic heart disease. In this most comprehensive book of its kind, internationally renowned authors correlate electrocardiographic recordings with anatomical patterns of myocardial ischemia to improve the diagnosis and management of patients with ischemic heart disease. The book is structured in two sections. Part One covers electrocardiographic patterns of ischemia, injury and infarction.- Each chapter discusses a different ECG abnormality in turn, clearly explaining the ischemic insults and electrophysiological mechanisms underlying each pattern to promote rapid and accurate interpretation of the ECG in the clinical setting. - ECG abnormalities are correlated with myocardial anatomy and coronary angiography to produce a series of practical diagnostic algorithms that allow the clinician to identify not only the occluded artery but the precise location of the occlusion within the artery, facilitating appropriate therapeutic decisions. - The authors also propose a new classification of Q-wave myocardial infarctions based on imaging correlations with advanced techniques such as contrast-enhanced cardiac magnetic resonance.Part Two of the book covers the ECG in clinical practice. Each chapter focuses on a different clinical syndrome, describing the role of the ECG in a global approach to the diagnosis, prognosis and risk stratification of patients with acute and chronic ischemic heart disease and guiding clinical decision-making.Extensively referenced and illustrated throughout, this book is highly recommended for any clinician involved in the diagnosis and management of ischemic heart disease.

Author Biography

A. Bayes de Luna, MD, FESC, FACC

Prof. Antonio Bayes de Luna was born in Vic (Barcelona) in 1936. He was trained as a cardiologist in the School of Cardiology of the University of Barcelona, and the Institute of Cardiology and Hammersmith Hospital in London. He is married to M. Clara Genis Piqueras and has five children.

In 1971 he became Associate Professor of the Universidad Autonoma de Barcelona, and Chief of Electrocardiography and Arrhythmic Unit in Hospital de Sant Pau. From 1992 to 1998 he was chairman of the Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery Department in Hospital de Sant Pau. He is now Full Professor of Cardiology in the Universidad Autonoma de Barcelona, and Director of the Institut Catala Cardiologia-Hospital Sant Pau. He has been the Director for 12 doctoral thesis, and cardiologists from 8 European countries as well as from several Latin American countries have taken training programs with him.

From 1973 to 1974 he was President of the Catalan Society of Cardiology; from 1983 to 1984, President of the Spanish Society of Cardiology; from 1983 to 1985, President of the Catalan Foundation of Cardiology (ACARD); and Vice-President of the Spanish Foundation of Cardiology from 1983 to 1985.

He has been very much involved in the activities of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) as a member of: the nucleus of the Working Group on Arrhythmias (1986-1993); the Executive Scientific Committee (1986-1992); the Nominating Committee for the Nomination of the Board of E.S.C. (1985-1991). He was the President of the XIV European Congress of Cardiology, in 1992, and of the XIIth International Congress on Cardiovascular Pharmacotherapy, in 2003. He has been member of the Executive Committee of the European Board Specialists Cardiology, in representation of ESC, and of the Editorial Board of the European Video Journal and European Heart Journal.

He was President of the World Heart Federation, the former International Society and Federation of Cardiology (1997-1998) which name changes during his presidency to World Heart Federation. He has established different projects devoted to fight against cardiovascular diseases, especially in developing countries such as "The twin centres program", "The white book in world cardiology" and the yearly "World Heart Day". He is President of the International Society for Cardiovascular Pharmacotherapy (ISCP) since 2006.

He was also member of the nucleus of the International Council of Electrocardiology, member of the Founder Nucleus of the International Society for Holter Monitoring and Vice-President of this Society till 1999.
