Summary

This new text thoroughly covers the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) National Standard Curriculum for First Responders. It also goes beyond the curriculum in areas such as airway management, the human body and medical emergencies. A simple, yet effective writing style presents information in an easy-to-understand manner, and case examples reflect the diversity of settings in which First Responders work. The text emphasizes teamwork throughout - giving information on how the First Responder can effectively assist and work with police, fire, and EMS systems. Instructor resources are available; please contact your Elsevier sales representative for details. Opening Scenarios set the scene for the chapter giving the student a clinical frame of reference. The scenarios are continued throughout the chapter and a solution is provided at the end of the chapter. Lesson Goals are provided at the beginning of every chapter to introduce the critical points and learning expectation of the chapter for the student. Chapter Objectives are listed at the beginning of the chapter. The Team Work Section in every chapter focuses on what a First Responder needs to know to work effectively with other emergency workers. Nuts and Bolts is a section at the end of every chapter. It incorporates the critical points, learning checklist, key terms, U.S. DOT objectives and workbook questions. This section is an excellent review area for students to check their understanding of chapter material. Critical Points are summarized at the end of each chapter. One paragraph summarizes for the student the take-home message of the chapter. Learning Checklists at the end of every chapter summarize key points from the chapter. Key Terms are highlighted throughout the text as they first appear, and defined at the end of each chapter. U.S. DOT Objectives are listed that pertain to the chapter. Integrated Workbook: The workbook is integrated throughout the book as a section at the end of every chapter. Approximately 15 questions per chapter are provided in a variety of formats including multiple choice, fill-in-the blank, matching and labeling. Caution Boxes reflect extra hints and highlight precautions the First Responder should take when performing his or her duties. Illustrated skill sheets, integrated throughout the text, consist of step-by-step photographs that are easy to follow. Special Populations chapter includes information on such groups as the elderly, patients with disabilities and those who are critically ill. Special Situations appendix includes information on multiple casualty incidents and the incident command system-plus, information on extended care and wilderness care for those operations restricted by problems of patient access, limited equipment or special environmental situations. Rapid First Responder is a pocket guide packaged with every book, and is a handy reference for First Responders working in the field.
