Excerpts

Arthritis is the number one cause of disability in the United States. It affects approximately 40 million Americans or one in six people. By 2020, experts expect nearly 60 million Americans will suffer from the effects of arthritis. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, $15 billion go into treating arthritis each year and the estimated total cost, including lost productivity, is $65 billion. One of the most common misconceptions regarding arthritis is that it is a single disease, when in reality there are many different types of arthritis, requiring different types of treatment. The most common types are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, and gout. Pain, aching, stiffness, and swelling in or around the joints are common symptoms of arthritis. While most forms of arthritis are not debilitating, they now limit everyday activities for approximately 7 million Americans.
Written by two experienced medical doctors, The Encyclopedia of Arthritis provides reliable, comprehensive coverage of the topic in an accessible A-to-Z format. Written for lay readers but useful to professionals, the book covers definitions of specific types of arthritis; symptoms, causes, and diagnoses; medications, pain management, and possible treatments; and much more. Relevant appendixes make statistics and resources easy to access, and information on drugs used for treatment is included. Directories of organizations, periodicals, and Internet resources, as well as an extensive bibliography help make this the ideal first stop for research on the disease.
