Emma is celebrating her Journalist of the Year Award when she first hears of the fatal accident in Lonsdale, one of Dublin's less fashionable suburbs. A car has crashed the barriers of a viaduct, killing the parish priest and seriously injuring one other. What first appears to be a tragic accident soon becomes a murder enquiry.
Emma has barely begun working the case when the killer strikes again. Drawn through a maze of suspicion and intrigue, she looks to the past for clues. Back in the 1960s, 35 girls perished in their school-dorm when a midnight fire raged through the building. The contents of a diary, detailing events from that time, is the catalyst for the evil now stalking the streets. As clue after clue falls into place, Emma unwittingly places her own life in mortal danger.
