Author Biography

Norm Ortner, a Southern California native, was born and raised in South Gate, a suburb of Los Angeles. Inspired by a childhood dream of becoming a fireman, he pursued his passion through education and professional development. Norm earned an Associate's Degree in Fire Science from East Los Angeles College, followed by a Bachelor's Degree in Fire Protection Administration from California State University, Los Angeles. His career in firefighting began in 1977 with the Lynwood Fire Department, where he rose to the rank of Fire Captain and served as the Reserve Firefighter Coordinator and union president (IAFF Local 3506). He also taught Fire Technology and Fire Officer classes at Mount San Antonio College and Santa Ana College for over two decades. After the Lynwood Fire Department merged with the Los Angeles County Fire Department in 2000, Norm continued his service until retiring in 2012. He and his wife, Merri Ann, reside in Orange County, where they enjoy family time with their five children and grandchildren.
