Summary

An unprecedented and thoughtful account of the influence of four of the most important leaders of the Colombian state of Cauca and the effect they had on the country during the 19th century, this book combines historical fact and literary license to portray the Colombian War of Independence from a unique angle. Although the central focus of the novel is not slavery, it does present a very real moral conflict. Otero's fluid and insightful writing style converts historical figures into three-dimensional characters and lays bare rarely explored depths of human consciousness and sensitivity.
