"When people think of Dredd enemies, they think of The Dark Judges." - Comics Beat

The crime is life! The Judgement is death! When Judge Death enters Mega-City One from a parallel dimension, his plan is simple: to find every single living cit and sentence them – to death!

The fourth volume in the oversized Essential Dredd series includes the first two Judge Death stories, from John Wagner (A History of Violence) and Brian Bolland (The Killing Joke) presented in stunning black and white, and featuring restored pages. It also includes the first solo Judge Anderson adventure, presented in luscious new colours, also starring Judge Death. The critically acclaimed Essential Dredd Collection is a perfect jumping on point for new readers and this volume introduces Judge Death, the Dark Judges and wisecracking Psi Judge Cassandra Anderson.

Author Biography

John Wagner
John Wagner has been scripting for 2000 AD for more years than he cares to remember. His creations include Judge Dredd, Strontium Dog, Ace Trucking, Al’s Baby, Button Man and Mean Machine. Outside of 2000 AD his credits include Star Wars, Lobo, The Punisher and the critically acclaimed A History of Violence.

Alan Grant

With over 300 2000 AD stories to his name – not to mention over 250 Daily Star Judge Dredd strips – Alan Grant’s prolific creative record speaks for itself. Outside the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic, Grant is well-known to Batman fans following a lengthy run on various incarnations of the title. More recently he has adapted Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novels Kidnapped and Doctor Jekyll and Mr Hyde in Graphic Novel format with artist Cam Kennedy.

Brian Bolland

Perhaps the most popular 2000 AD artist of all time, Brian Bolland’s clean-line style and meticulous attention to detail ensure that his artwork on strips including Dan Dare, Future Shocks, Judge Dredd and Walter the Wobot looks as fresh today as it did when first published. Co-creator of both Judge Anderson and The Kleggs, Bolland’s highly detailed style unfortunately precluded him from doing many sequential strips — although he found the time to pencil both Camelot 3000 and Batman: The Killing Joke for DC Comics.

Brett Ewins
Since his Future Shock debut in Prog 37, Brett Ewins has been one of the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic’s most beloved artists. Co-creator of the classic Bad Company, Ewins also contributed to A.B.C. Warriors, Daily Star Dredd, Judge Anderson, Judge Dredd, Kelly, Mega-City One, Rogue Trooper, Ro-Jaws, Robo-Tales and Universal Soldier. Beyond 2000 AD, Ewins was a co-founding editor of Deadline magazine, and co-pencilled and inked the hugely acclaimed Skreemer series, which he co-created with writer Peter Milligan. He also created Johnny Nemo, which now enjoyed great success in Cyberosia Publishing’s new US edition. He died in 2015.

Cliff Robinson
Cliff Robinson is one of 2000 AD’s longest-serving artists, having made his debut with a Future Shock way back in Prog 362! Since then, he has co-created Mother Earth, and illustrated numerous Judge Dredd strips, as well as Future Shocks, Judge Anderson and Venus Bluegenes.

Robin Smith

Aside from his own co-created Bad City Blue, Robin Smith has illustrated Future Shocks, Judge Dredd, Mean Machine, Rogue Trooper, Strontium Dog, Tharg the Mighty and Time Twisters. He is also the illustrator of Paradox Press’s Green Candles, and is co-creator of The Bogie Man with John Wagner and Alan Grant.

Alex Ronald

Alex Ronald has contributed to Judge Dredd, Missionary Man, Rogue Trooper, Sinister Dexter and Vector 13. He has also worked for the Caliber Comics’ anthology Negative Burn, IDW’s Rot & Ruin, and illustrated covers for Titan’s Doctor Who line of comics.

Pat Mills

Pat Mills is the creator and first editor of 2000 AD and co-creator of ABC Warriors, Finn, Flesh, Nemesis the Warlock and Slaine. In the US, Pat is best known for Marshal Law, the cult character he co-created with artist Kevin O'Neill.

Bryan Talbot

Bryan Talbot is one of the UK’s most respected comics artists. He has contributed to Future Shocks, Judge Dredd,
Nemesis the Warlock, Ro-Busters and Sláine in the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic, and most recently wrote and illustrated a
silent One-Off. Beyond 2000 AD, Talbot is renowned for his body of graphic novel work, which includes The Adventures of Luther Arkwright, Heart of Empire, The Tale of One Bad Rat and Alice in Sunderland.

Andy Clarke

Andy Clarke make his 2000 AD debut on Sinister Dexter and quickly gained in popularity thanks to his highly detailed and realistic artwork. He proceeded to illustrate Judge Dredd, Nikolai Dante, Rose O’ Rion, Pulp Sci-Fi and his first co-created series, punk psychic thriller Thirteen. The success of the latter saw Clarke teamed with Andy Diggle on Snow/Tiger and with Robbie Morrison on Shimura.

Beyond 2000 AD, he has had great success at DC Comics, working on Aquaman, Detective Comics, R.E.B.E.L.S., Batman Confidential and Batman and Robin.
