Though the United States is often said to be a melting pot society for its assimilation of multiple cultures, Americans have also demonstrated a strong interest in retaining elements of their historical, cultural and artistic heritage. Since the 19th century, and especially following World War II, this has resulted in the establishment of numerous ethnic museums, art galleries, and historic sites. Author Biography

Victor J. Danilov has served as both the director and president of Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry and is the founding director of the Museum Management Program at the University of Colorado. He has written more than 24 books, many of which focus on museums and historic sites. He lives in Evanston, Illinois.
