Summary

Graham Mcglone was born at Silvertown in London's docklands in 1946. His long career in the Merchant Navy, from deck boy to captain, gave him a wide experience to write books with a nautical theme. He is happily retired, travels extensively, and lives near Folkestone in Kent. The year is 1998. The unthinkable has happened. The power-crazed leaders of Russia, the USA, and Libya, are are embarking upon political brinkmanship; and now they've gone beyond the point of no-return. As nuclear war appears imminent, Michael Stephens, the captain of an aged wooden ship called Polaris, escapes from England with his family and friends. They head out into the safety of the remote islands of the Atlantic Ocean. As the northern hemisphere becomes embroiled in nuclear war, with radio-active dust-storms swirling across Europe, Polaris must overcome her own problems. Low on fuel, she must battle with storms, and steam vast distances to outrun certain death from the red-hot ash clouds that are moving inexorably southwards. The Stephens family must exchange their comfortable life in England for an uncertain future in distant islands. This is a story of their fight for survival in the face of man's inhumanity to man, of heroes and villains, and of Polaris - the heroine. Full to the brim with high-seas adventure, political intrigue, and the evil Captain Wahib.
