Er nimmt einerseits den uberlieferten hebraischen Text in den Blick und legt ihn "synchron" nach literaturwissenschaftlichen Methoden aus. Andererseits werden "diachron" die literargeschichtlichen Vorganger-Kompositionen rekonstruiert und nach ihrer historischen Funktion befragt. Eine abschlieaende Synthese reflektiert das Verhaltnis der beiden Auslegungsweisen, greift aber auch auslegungsgeschichtliche und aktuelle Fragestellungen auf. Am Anfang der Literargeschichte steht eine Kampfschrift gegen politische Vasallenschaft, die im Verlauf von 250 Jahren vier Mal umgestaltet und erweitert wurde. Das Ende bildet eine Erzahlung, die den Herrschaftswechsel vom Pharao zum Gott Israels in hochster dramatischer Zuspitzung darbietet und so das zukunftsoffene Paradigma einer freiheitlichen politischen Theologie entwirft.
