To be buying F# in the past you needed to know about it and therefore to be listening to the F# newsgroups that the author, Don Syme, runs through Microsoft research. Microsoft are promoting F# to full language status and including it in the standard VS downloads from .NET 4.0 onwards as functional programming becomes a progressively more important part of their strategy, so ita (TM)s natural to expect this will be a better-performing book because of this promotion.
