Summary

Each person approaches the reading of the Catechism of the Catholic Church from his or her own perspective. The questions we bring and the concerns that present themselves as we read the text are shaped by our roles and responsibilities within the life of the Church community. I come to this text as theologian and catechist. As theologian I ask a number of questions: What is in the Catechism? What theological perspective is reflected there? What is not in the Catechism and why is it not there? As catechist and catechetical theorist I ask other questions: Given the text, what are we to do with it? What is the role of the Catechism in the catechetical enterprise of the Church? How does our understanding of contemporary catechesis shape our approach to the Catechism? These are the questions I bring to a careful and critical reading of the Catechism.
