Summary

Five years ago, Good Governance Africa undertook to focus its National Security Programme on a core phenomenon that actively seeks to disrupt, undermine and destroy peace, development and security across Africa. This is the problem of extremisms in Africa – an increasing scourge. These movements are religious, ethnic and race-based in nature, and represent complex and supreme threats to stability. To better prepare ourselves to understand and engage extremist threats in order to prevent, counter and overcome them, GGA has scoured the African continent, producing a collection of close on 50 chapters of knowledge in a trilogy of book volumes (of which this book is the third) covering a plethora of topics across regions and countries, dedicated to markedly diverse themes. Volume 3 of Extremisms in Africa consists of 17 contributions, and evidences an even greater attention to detail on further developments and potential threats. Author Biography

Susan Russell is the deputy head of publications at Good Governance Africa. Susan has worked in journalism and media management for more than 30 years in various roles that have included news reporter, subeditor, section editor, assistant editor, publisher and general manager. After graduating from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, with a Bachelor’s degree in English and Comparative African Government and Administration, Susan joined Daily News as a news reporter. Four years later, she joined Business Day, where she spent several years as a hard-news reporter. Moving to Sunday Times, sh Alain Tschudin, PhD., is executive director of Good Governance Africa (SADC). A registered psychologist with a PhD. in Psychology from Natal University, Alain was a Post-doctoral Research Fellow at the University of Cambridge, before returning to studies there, completing an M. Phil. in Divinity and a PhD. in Ethics. He has broad research and community-engagement interests, and has worked for universities and nongovernmental organisations in Africa and Europe, with the European Commission, and as lead consultant for Save the Children and the United Nations Children’s Fund on child protection a Stephen Buchanan-Clarke is an independent analyst with several years’ experience working in conflict and post-conflict settings in Africa on national security and development issues. He currently serves as lead researcher for Good Governance Africa’s National Security Programme, and has been involved in the editing of all three volumes of the Extremisms in Africa series, as well authoring several chapters. Craig Moffat, PhD., is a security specialist for Good Governance Africa’s National Security Programme. He has more than 17 years’ practical experience working for government institutions and multilateral organisations. He was previously employed by the South African Foreign Service, where he worked extensively at identifying and analysing security threats towards South Africa as well as the southern Africa region. Previously, he was the political advisor for the Pretoria Regional Delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross. He holds a PhD. in Political Science from Stellenbosch Lloyd Coutts is the head of publications at Good Governance Africa. He has an extensive background in journalism and media spanning 36 years. He holds a Bachelor’s in Journalism and Media Studies (Honours) from the University of the Witwatersrand, and has worked as a reporter, subeditor, news editor, assistant editor and acting editor for publications such as Business Day, The Star, Business Report and Sunday World. Lloyd also has experience in wire services, notably in the German Press Agency (dpa) and radio (Network Radio News and Classic FM). He has also worked in television news at eNCA.
