Summary

Charles Cordier first captured attention when he exhibited a bust of a Sudanese man at the Paris Salon in 1848, and he soon went on to create a series of spectacularly lifelike busts for the city's National History Museum. One of the few artists of his day to explore the new discipline of anthropology, Cordier often chose Algerians, Egyptians, other Africans, and southern Europeans as his models. This pioneering sculptor is the subject of Facing the Other, a comprehensive survey that includes 600 illustrations and a catalogue raisonne of Cordier's work. In addition to its ethnographic focus, Cordier's work was distinguished by its masterly use of luxurious and colorful marble. This definitive volume brings the work of France's great ethnographic sculptor back into the limelight.
