Summary

Femtosecond cataract surgery is the next step in the evolution of cataract surgery. In Femtosecond Cataract Surgery: A Primer, Dr. Louis E. Probst and Dr. Clara C. Chan lead the way by bringing together current technology and clinical experience to provide a concise yet comprehensive overview on this ground-breaking technique. Femtosecond Cataract Surgery: A Primeris composed of clinical chapters written by 18 of the world's leading experts who have pioneering, hands-on experience performing the procedure paired with chapters on the technology of each of the 4 current systems. Intraoperative and clinical photographs further showcase the most up-to-date techniques and clinical experiences in each of the systems, as well as illustrations of their unique and common characteristics. Features include the following: New data presented in a companion table format to evaluate the different technologies Consistent representation of each system First-hand knowledge from expert international surgeons Additionally, a comparison table has been constructed with the most recent information offering clear differentiation on the techniques and technologies of each system. The table also tracks each system's progression in the approval system in the United States and Europe. The final chapter in Femtosecond Cataract Surgery: A Primerserves as an update on the current investigations of presbyopia treatment with femtosecond lasers. Providing a wealth of new data in a concise and organized format, Femtosecond Cataract Surgery: A Primeris an indispensible resource for ophthalmologists, cataract surgeons, optometrists, and other professionals in the eye care industry.

Author Biography

Louis E. Probst, MD is the National Medical Director of TLC, The Laser Eye Centers, the largest laser vision provider in North America. He has performed over 100,000 laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) procedures over the last 16 years, edited 6 reference textbooks on refractive surgery and ophthalmology, written over 80 book chapters and 50 peer-reviewed publications on refractive surgery, designed 10 instruments for ophthalmic surgery, and has given over 300 lectures at national and international meetings on his various innovations regarding improving patient outcomes in refractive surgery and ophthalmology.

Dr. Probst serves as chief surgeon at several TLC locations in Illinois, Wisconsin, South Carolina, and Florida and is a member of the Clinical Advisory Group of TLC that provides guidance and advice to over 500 ophthalmologists and 5000 optometrists nationally. Dr. Probst also serves as a trainer and educator for surgeons interested in learning the latest LASIK techniques. Dr. Probst trains residents and fellows in ophthalmology as a volunteer assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin. Dr. Probst’s first introduction to the femtosecond laser was in 2000, when he visited Ron Kurtz, MD, at the Center for Ultrafast Optical Sciences at the University of Michigan to see the prototype of the femtosecond laser (IntraLase, later acquired
by Abbott Medical Optics). He acquired his first femtosecond laser in 2005, started performing custom femtosecond LASIK exclusively in 2007, and has since performed over 20,000 femtosecond LASIK procedures using 6 femtosecond lasers. Dr. Probst has developed specific techniques for femtosecond LASIK including flap/zap LASIK, single-use instrumentation for LASIK, and oval/ellipsoid flaps for LASIK.

Clara C. Chan, MD, FRCSC is a faculty member at the University of Toronto and serves as the Assistant Director of Resident Surgical Teaching for the Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences. She is on staff at St. Michael’s Hospital and the University Health Network’s Toronto Western Hospital, where she trains residents and cornea fellows from around the world. At the Yonge Eglinton Laser Centre, she exclusively uses the femtosecond laser for custom refractive surgery, treatments for keratoconus including Intacs, and corneal surgery.

Dr. Chan attended Stanford University in California for her undergraduate studies and received her medical degree from Queen’s University, School of Medicine located in Kingston, Ontario. During her ophthalmology residency at the University of Toronto, her surgical expertise was recognized with awards for exceptional performance in cataract surgery by Mount Sinai Hospital and the Kensington Eye Institute. She was also acknowledged for clinical excellence by St. Michael’s Hospital and the Hospital for Sick Children. The Canadian Institute for the Blind (CNIB) recognized Dr. Chan as one of the top 5 ophthalmology residents in Canada and awarded her the E. A. Baker scholarship to pursue postdoctoral fellowship studies at the Cincinnati Eye Institute.

Dr. Chan has published over 35 papers and abstracts in the ophthalmic literature  and has presented and taught courses to ophthalmologists at major national and international meetings. She is also active with the Canadian Ophthalmological Society, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS), and serves on the EyeWorld editorial board.
