Excerpts

Leaning against the couch, Aunt Sarah tossed her jet black hair and took a sip of her beer, "So, Curls, what've you been writing? I know you've got something for me to read." "Well...ye- I don't know..." I hesitated. What I'd written the night before, in a fit of tears, was really quite personal. I wasn't sure if I was ready to share it. Even with her. "Every poem is meant to be read by someone other than the writer. Know who said that?" She asked, giving me a coy grin. Her hazel eyes twinkled mysteriously. I shrugged, "You. Just now." "You're a genius!" She gave the air a fist pump and I laughed at her ridiculous display of excitement. "Ok, I'll get it. But you can't post it! Ok? It's just for you to read, that's all." I warned. She owned an online magazine and had posted several of my poems without even telling me. "I promise." She smiled innocently and I arched an eyebrow, at which she laughed and exclaimed, "Fix your face and lower your weapon!" "Shut up!" I laughed. Aunt Sarah calls my eyebrows a weapon because when I was a kid, I sort of...well, I'll just say it, I had a unibrow. But not anymore, I keep my eyebrows waxed and nicely trimmed. You'd never know what I used to look like. Thank goodness. I showed her the poem, afterwards we both had a good cry, talked for a few more hours and eventually fell asleep on the couch.
