Known simply as the Algebra 1 EOC, this computer-based test measures your mastery of first-year Algebra. Here you'll find everything you need to know about the test combined with all the practice you need to prepare for test day. Because one of the proven strategies to achieving better performance on any standardized test is practice, we give you four full-length practice tests (two in the book and two online atwww.rea.com, complete with detailed explanations. Each of our eight review chapters covers one of the major Algebra 1 subject areas and shows you how each area will be tested. We use a step-by-step approach to help you build your knowledge and confidence, with full explanations and extensive examples.About the TestThe Florida EOC Assessments are part of Florida’s Next Generation Strategic Plan, which is designed to increase student achievement and improve college and career readiness. EOC assessments are computer-based, criterion-referenced assessments that measure specific standards that have been developed for several courses, including Algebra 1, Biology 1, Geometry, and U.S. History. How is this test given? For the majority of students, the EOC assessments are computer-based. Exceptions are made for students with disabilities who need to take EOC assessments on paper.Format of the TestThe Algebra 1 EOC assessment includes two types of test items: approximately 35-40 multiple-choice items (MC) and 25-30 fill-in response items (FR). You will also have a reference sheet that you can consult. According to the state’s specifications, multiple-choice questions should take an average of one minute to answer. You should allocate about 1-2 minutes per fill-in question. You will be allowed to use a calculator on this exam.Who takes this test? All students enrolled in and completing the following courses take the Algebra 1 EOC:• Algebra 1• Algebra 1 Honors• Algebra 1B• Pre-AICE Mathematics 1• IB Middle Years Program – Algebra 1 HonorsComputerized Testing -Practice TestsPrior to taking the Algebra 1 EOC Assessment, students are required to participate in a practice-test session at their school in order to become familiar with the testing tools and platform. These are computer-based practice tests, called Electronic Practice Assessment Tools (ePATs). The online computerized practice tests included with this book will give students a valuable head start.E-Tools for Exam DayThe tools and resources available to you on test day will vary slightly depending on the subject area assessed. All students taking a computer-based assessment will have access to the following e-tools in the computer-based platform:• Review: Students use this e-tool to mark questions to be reviewed at a later time. Before exiting the assessment and submitting their responses, students are taken to a screen that identifies questions that are answered, unanswered, and marked for review.• Eliminate Choice: Students use this tool to mark answer choices that they wish to eliminate.• Highlighter: Students use this tool to highlight sections of the question or passage.• Eraser: Students use the eraser to remove marks made by the highlighter or the eliminate-choice tool.• Help: Students may click the Help icon to learn more about the e-tools. The Help text appears in a separate window.• Calculator: Students are provided access to a calculator, which appears in a pop-up window. For Algebra 1, students use a four function calculator.• Straight-edge: Students are provided a straightedge e-tool, which looks like a ruler without measuring units. Students use the straightedge as they would use the edge of a piece of paper to help work a problem.• Exhibit: Students are provided a reference sheet of commonly used formulas and conversions to work the test questions. The reference sheet appears in a pop-up window under the exhibit icon.Students are also provided directions for completing fill-in response questions and a diagram and helpful hints for the appropriate calculator under the exhibit icon.In addition to the e-tools, students are also provided work folders to use as scratch paper to work out the problems. Schools may also permit students to use approved hand-held calculators, and can also provide paper versions of the reference sheet. What to Do before the Test• Pay attention in class.• Carefully work through the chapters and problems in this book. Mark any topics that you find difficult and rework them.• Take the practice tests and become familiar with the format of the Algebra 1 EOC Assessment. Try to take these tests under simulated conditions—time yourself, stay calm, and pace yourself. As we said earlier, multiple-choice questions should take about one minute and the fill-in questions about 1-2 minutes. We make this easy with our online practice tests, which provide a timed, auto-scored experience. (www.rea.com)What to Do During the Test• Read the questions carefully to make sure you understand what is being asked of you. Every word in the question gets you that much closer to the answer.• Read all of the possible answers. Even if you think you have found the correct response, do not automatically assume that it is the best answer. Read through each answer choice to be sure you are not jumping to conclusions.• Use the process of elimination in multiple-choice questions. This is one of the best techniques in solving these types of questions. Try to eliminate those choices that appear obviously incorrect. For each one you can eliminate, you’ve increased your odds dramatically of answering correctly. If you eliminate two choices, for example, you now have a 50% chance of answering the question correctly.• Work on the easier questions first. If you find yourself working too long on one question, move on to the next question. When you’ve reached the end of the test, there will be a window on the computer that will pop up and tell you which questions were unanswered so you can go back to them.• Be aware of the correct units. If the question asks formeters, make sure you’re not selecting an answer choice that looks correct, but is infeet.• In fill-in response questions, make sure your answer is complete. Again, check the types of units of measurement. For example, is the test asking for square inches or cubic inches?• Answer all of the questions. You will not be penalized for incorrect answers, so you’ll increase your chances of improving your score by guessing. Even one “good guess” can increase your score by a point.• Relax.

Good luck!
