Excerpts

On his old rusty bike with solid tires, Adrie biked on the cobblestones of Rotterdam to the garage where he was going to work. He was going to meet Mr. Porce, the service chief. It was a forty-? ve minute bike ride that was very rough. As long as there were bike paths, it was not bad, but whenever he had to bike on the road, it was murder. Mr. Spoormaker introduced him to Mr. Porce, who asked him a couple of questions and said that he could start on Monday. Adrie had a question too, a very important question: "How much money do I make?" "Sixteen cents per hour," Porce said. "That's not bad for a ?fteen-year-old boy, isn't it?" To Adrie, sixteen cents per hour was only a lousy tip and an insult. He had made sixty cents per hour before. However, if he wanted to play motor mechanic, there was a price to pay if he wanted to learn the trade.
