Author Biography

Freelance writer and photographer Michael Lanza is Northwest Editor of Backpacker magazine and writes a monthly column and other articles for AMC Outdoors; his work has also appeared in National Geographic Adventure, Outside, and numerous other publications, and he is the author of three other guidebooks. An avid backpacker, climber, cyclist, and skier, he has hiked extensively in the western United States as well as New England, where he first began hiking. He formerly syndicated a weekly column about New England outdoor activities in about 20 daily newspapers throughout the region and co-hosted a call-in show about the outdoors on New Hampshire Public Radio. A native of Leominster, Massachusetts, Lanza has a B.S. in photojournalism from Syracuse University and spent 10 years as a reporter and editor at Massachusetts and New Hampshire newspapers. He now lives in Boise, Idaho, with his wife, Penny Beach, and their son Nate and daughter Alex, and frequently visits New England to hike.
