Summary

Sophocles' first four surviving tragedies, all probably created when he was between 50 and 70, are collected here. Aias dramatizes a hero's madness and its terrible consequences. Antigone presents the disastrous conflict between Antigone and the new ruler Kreon. In Young Women of Trachis Herakles' wife Deianeira attempts to retrieve his love from a new mistress, but destroys them both. Oidipous the King is perhaps the most famous of all Greek dramas, a pitiless reminder of the limits of human knowledge. Oidipous' quest to relieve his city from a plague leads him to discover that he has murdered his own father and married his mother.
